A network created after WebChat closed
According to its official history, HybridIRC was founded in 2018 after WebChat closed following the death of its founder, Mark Owen. Berat proposed the HybridIRC name and Gokturk secured the domain; both had been WebChat staff members.
The project began as a new network rather than a renamed version of the closed commercial service. Its documentation describes selecting InspIRCd for IRC and Atheme for account and channel services. It describes itself as volunteer-run, free and advertisement-free.
The public staff list checked names Gokturk, shayne, nero and Dimitris as network administrators. launchd, MeGatRoN and acacia are server operators; acea is a help operator. These are published team roles, not proof of legal ownership of all infrastructure.
Hostnames for TLS, IPv4 or IPv6 connections
The official server list recommends irc.hybridirc.com, a server-selection hostname supporting IPv4 and IPv6, with TLS on port 6697. According to its documentation, client-server certificates are issued by Let’s Encrypt.
Enable TLS explicitly: entering port 6697 without encryption in a client that requires a separate setting can fail. If you need IPv4 only or IPv6 only, use the published hostname instead of an IP address that can change.

- Plaintext ports: 6660–6669 and 7000.
- Protocol-specific names: ipv4.hybridirc.com and ipv6.hybridirc.com.
- The list also publishes nexus.hybridirc.com and sirius.hybridirc.com; the general hostname helps follow server changes.
Webchat access and a registered account are different
HybridIRC provides browser access through Kiwi IRC, The Lounge and gamja. These are chat interfaces, not your ZNC administration panel or a provider’s billing portal. Check the domain and service before saving credentials.
Its help center covers nickname registration, identification, SASL, CertFP, channel protection and bot setup. Use the network’s account documentation. An external provider’s form only gathers details to configure the service you order.
For website embedding, review the integration documentation, permissions and mobile behavior. Public chat needs rules and moderation; adding a widget does not automatically configure registration, roles or community protection.
How to interpret its size and prepare a bot
HybridIRC appears near the top of the netsplit.de comparison checked. Its official site also publishes active-user and peak figures that do not necessarily match the crawler’s observations. These use different sources and periods; do not add them together or describe them as unique people.
When choosing a network, consider relevant channels, activity times and moderation. A high connection count does not establish that your channel will gain more participants.
Before installing an Eggdrop or bridge, check help, the MOTD and channel rules. Agree on bot nick, owner identity, commands and announcement frequency. Use #help or official HybridIRC contacts for network access questions; open a service ticket for changes to a bot we manage.
