A network of servers and committees, not a single owner
Undernet is maintained through cooperation among server administrators, operators and volunteer committees. Its website distinguishes development, routing, channel services and user support teams. Ownership of a sponsored server is not ownership of the whole network.
A documented milestone is the creation of the Channel Service Committee in 1995 to improve channel stability and prevent takeovers. Its X service maintains registered channels and supports user lists, permissions and bans. This is central to Undernet’s development of persistent community administration.
The network also publishes training resources such as OpSchool and the Documents Project. Use its committee pages and charter for current responsibilities and processes. We do not describe one person as the network’s “owner” when its sources describe a collective structure.
Addresses and ports: check what is actually published
The official list checked publishes irc.undernet.org and TCP ports 6660–6669 and 7000. It also distinguishes IPv6 and regional endpoints. Choose from that list rather than copying an IP address from an old guide.
That table does not identify 6697 as a TLS port. A port used by other networks does not establish equivalent support here. Before transmitting credentials, confirm current encryption support and the endpoint through network documentation or staff. This review checked web sources; it did not test IRC sessions.
- General hostname: irc.undernet.org.
- IPv6: irc6.undernet.org; regional endpoints eu6.undernet.org and us6.undernet.org.
- Other published hostnames: ix1.undernet.org and ix2.undernet.org.
- Network help: #help; X and registered-channel support: #cservice.
The rule that matters for a shared bouncer
The acceptable-use policy limits shell or bouncer-provider access to one connection per person and one account, ident or login per person at that provider. It lists separate per-user and per-IP limits for other providers and an exemption request process.
A commercial ZNC can share its outgoing IPv4 address with other accounts. A plan supporting up to three networks does not allow three simultaneous identities on Undernet or bypass its limits. Ask your provider about IP compatibility and authorization before paying.
For a blocked service, retain the error message and contact the responsible team. Changing IP to evade a ban can breach the policy. The network publishes an appeal procedure; only its staff can approve an exemption.
X, an Eggdrop and your bot owner serve different roles
X is Undernet’s channel service. A radio or trivia Eggdrop is an external program participating in your channel with contracted functions. X manager status does not automatically make you an Eggdrop owner, and ordering a bot does not grant authority over X.
Protect your account identity using Undernet’s procedure. When ordering a bot, distinguish its nickname, channel and your authorized identity. Recognition instructions must match the installed script; X commands are not assumed to be bot commands.
The policy prohibits flood, spam, clones, mass invitations and unsolicited advertising. Configure trivia and radio announcements so people can converse. Ask Undernet about network access; request changes to an Eggdrop we manage through its service ticket.
